Engineered components and structures manufactured with permissible geometric or dimensional tolerance variation result in “gaps” when assembled together.  Gaps can also sometime arise due to component wear or misalignment.

Peelable Shims

Peelable Shims

Form a rigid structure that functions as a solid but may be reduced to a precise thickness by hand-peeling off layers (foils). Individual foils of material can vary in thickness from 0.025mm (0.001”) to 0.1mm (0.004”).

Can be produced in variety of metallic materials, including titanium, stainless, copper, bronze and aluminium, as well as much lighter weight materials, including polyester, polyimide and glass and carbon fibre composites.  Metallic foils can be coated for corrosion resistance.

Different peel strengths can be offered dependant on application requirements and customer preference.  Peelable shims can be bonded across the entire surface, or just one edge

A peelable shim where the foils are bonded across an edge, as opposed to the entire surface of the foils.  This permits shims to be easily reused once peeled, if necessary.

Hybrid Shims

Where gaps are likely to be larger than most, a hybrid shim, comprising a solid part and a laminated part will frequently provide the solution.

Hybrid shims offer strength whilst still providing for micro adjustment. Solid part of the shim can be used as a bearing surface. Tends to offer be lower cost than a fully laminated shim.

Designed to cope with angles and curves and ensure a tight-tolerance assembly wherever relatively large spaces are encountered between mating parts.

Manufactured using a technique that does not require specialist tooling.  Can be produced precisely and economically in small or large batches

Where particular flexibility is required, for example to suit complex geometries or curvatures, tapered shims can be manufactured from high-performance engineered plastic material.

Some assembly techniques or heavily loaded structures require solid shims, sometimes called fillers, packers or spacers with a constant thickness.

An infinite variety of shapes and sizes can be produced according to the particular application requirement, including tapers and radius fillers

We manufacture all of our own laminated material for conversion into detail parts or for sale as sheets.  Standard sheet sizes are 610mm (24”) x 1220mm (48”).  Laminated sheet thicknesses vary from 0.15mm (0.006”) to 12.7mm (0.5”)

Photo chemical machining enables the production of highly-accurate and intricate components through an acid etching process. Particularly attractive for use in electronics, filtration and aerospace and defence applications.

Minute holes and radii, at a pitch that would make conventional processes uneconomic, can be produced without inducing burrs or stresses in the material. Tooling costs are low, resulting in highly cost-effective solutions for prototype development of thin sheet details. A wide range of metals can be etched in a range of thicknesses from 0.127mm (0.005”) up to 1.6mm (0.063”), from a standard sheet size of 450mm (18”) x 300mm (12”).
